Types of AFL Bets

The betting types for AFL are very similar to most ball sports, but in order to assist in making a successful bet, it’s a good idea you have a read of the bets and understand them fully. This will hopefully help you have a successful punt on a AFL match or round.

List of eSports Bets Explained

The most common bets that can be made using online AFL sports betting sites and betting apps are as follows:

Margin betting

The idea of margin betting on AFL games may sound complicated, but is in fact surprisingly simple. It is a way for bookmakers to increase the number of possible outcomes in a bet result. The margin can be either; a narrow points range or, it can be a broad range like 1 – 39 points. A point spread can be used as a form of margin betting for example; win bets on a sports team might have odds of 1.83 whilst their opponent might have 1.13 odds. This means you could win $1.83 for every $1 you bet if your team wins but lose your stake if they do not.

Head to Head betting

Head to Head is a form of AFL sports betting whereby the bookmaker creates a market for the two possible outcomes of a match: Team A win or Team B. It is the most popular form of sports betting.

In some cases however, such as sports like soccer and football, a third result is possible – a draw.

Line betting

Line betting in AFL games is a simple bet where the winner is chosen once you factor in a set of handicaps such as “points start” where one team is essentially given a headstart (of points). You can win a line bet even if your team doesn’t win.. they just have to lose by less than the headstart given to the other team.

Over and Under betting

Over/Under bets or also known as Totals is one of the most popular forms of betting on sports, and in recent years it has also increased in popularity online. It is also one of the most common bets offered by AFL bookmakers. With over/under odds, you’re betting on whether or not a total score will be above or below a specified number set by the bookmaker.

Parlay Formular Bet or Accumulator bet

It is a betting ticket where multiple selections must win for the bet to be successful. It is often referred to as ‘sprint betting’ or ‘accumulator betting’ or ‘series betting’ or ‘multiple selection bets’. It is sometimes referred to as a combo, but this can also refer to a bet on two or more selections that are not matched together (e.g. one selection against the other).

The fun thing about parlaying is that you don’t need all your selections to win in order to make some money from your bet. You only need one! This is because when one selection wins you will receive a payout based on how many selections you’ve included, to the payout of just the one you’ve picked winning alone.

For example:

You have picked selection A to win on its own @ 1.57 and selection B to win on its own @ 1.45 and you have also included selection C @ 3.50 and D @ 6.00 into the bet. So if selection A wins you will receive 1 x return of the odds of 1.57 for your stake + 2 x return of the odds of 1.45 for your stake + 3 x return of the odds of 3.50 for your stake + 4 x return of the odds of 6.00 for your stake = 5 x 1.57 + 6 x 1.45 +12 x 3.50 + 24 x 6 = $537.37 plus the original stake ($10) = total profit $547.

Prop Bets

Prop bets are bets on whether or not something will happen or how many times it will happen during an AFL round/tournament. These bets come in all forms and sizes but can generally be classified into skilled and un-skilled related bets. Bets such as Number of Marks, Number of possessions, Goals, Behinds are considered as Prop Bets
